An update to Benton County's unofficial election results shows it's still an extraordinarily close race between the two candidates for Corvallis's Ward 9 City Council seat. The update reflects all ballots that were sent by mail and postmarked by Nov. 5.
Oregon gives the U.S. Postal Service a week to get those ballots into the hands of elections officials for counting.
All nine Corvallis council seats were up for election this November, and in eight of those seats a clear winner emerged within a day. But as of Wednesday, Nov. 13, Ward 9 incumbent Tony Cadena is only 59 votes ahead of his opponent, Sunrise Corvallis slate member and activist Karen-Jean Canan.
At this point, 81.05% of eligible voters in Benton County have had their ballots counted. After the second round of unofficial election results on Nov.
7, Benton County Clerk James Morales told Mid-Valley Media that he did not expect numbers to meaningfully change moving forward. On Wednesday, he said there are still some 1,300 ballots countywide that could be cured, though the number in Corvallis' Ward 9 is sure to be much smaller. According to the Benton County website, final election results will be released on Nov.
27, following the ballot challenge resolution deadline. Dec. 2 will be the last day to deliver certified official election results abstracts.
