7-yr jail for bid to kill over no free mobile recharge

Ludhiana: A local resident has been sentenced to seven years in prison for attempting to murder a shopkeeper with a spade when asked to clear his mobile-phone recharge dues. Kamaljit Singh, of Lalheri Road, was convicted by the court of additional sessions judge Dr Rajneesh and fined Rs 25,000. The court found Kamaljit Singh guilty of inflicting grievous injuries on shopkeeper Rakesh Kumar after the latter had demanded payment for a previous mobile-phone recharge.

The prosecution suggests that Kamaljit Singh attacked Rakesh Kumar with a spade as well as a sword, causing injuries to his hand, head, and lips, before Kamaljit fled the scene. The attacker was later arrested and charged with multiple offences, including attempt to murder , snatching, and criminal intimidation. The court, citing both eyewitness testimony and medical evidence, concluded that Kamaljit Singh had acted with intent to kill Rakesh Kumar.



Kamaljit Singh denied the charges, claiming false implication, but the court rejected his defence, stating there was no evidence of bias by the investigating officer. The shopkeeper who was attacked said the accused was habitual of commting violent offences and wanted to get his mobile phone recharged free of cost. He was charged on December 16, 2016, day after asking for recharge the mobile-phone shop for Rs 400.
