Pune: A 76-year-old woman was found dead with severe burn injuries in her first-floor flat in Guru Ganeshnagar society in Kothrud around 8am on Monday. The Kothrud police identified the victim as Komal Sampat Ghule , who lived alone in the flat in the D-2 building in the housing complex. Ghule's son lives in Nagpur, and her daughter lives at her marital home in the city.
Her husband passed away a few years ago. The circumstances in which Ghule was found dead left the police as well as Pune fire brigade personnel, who reached the site, flummoxed. "The main entrance of the flat was open when the police and the firemen reached after being alerted about the death by society residents," senior inspector Sandeep Deshmane of Kothrud police told TOI.
"A resident of the building informed the police and the fire brigade about the smell of smoke from the flat," he said. "The fire did not cause any major damage to the flat, nor were there any signs of a short circuit or gas leak. The furniture was intact.
No material was found near the body. We are ascertaining if it is a case of death by suicide or an accidental fire that may have occurred while the victim was carrying a pooja lamp. However, we cannot reach any conclusion right now," Deshmane said.
"We have done a panchanama report of the spot. We are yet to arrive at any conclusion about what caused the fire," Deshmane said. The fire brigade officials also said there was no major damage to the flat.
"The fire had been extinguished by the time we reached the flat. The police were already at the spot," fire station officer Prakash Gore said. The society is one of the bigger housing complexes in the Kothrud area and has multiple buildings.
Nobody from the housing society heard any noise from the victim's house, police said. TOI on Monday afternoon visited the society. A resident said, "The elderly woman used to gel well with other society members.
