After making it through the cold and dark winter months, the first week of April has seen the UK basking in some superb spring weather. On Friday, parts of the UK are set to be hotter than the Algarve, and the temperatures are showing no signs of dropping. But as many Brits have spent the last few months indoors, their gardens may be looking neglected and in need of sprucing up in time for the summer.
With that in mind, we’ve pulled together a selection of garden and DIY tools from retailers including Gtech, Argos and Amazon. The British firm has unveiled its spring lineup featuring highly-rated lawnmowers and trimmers, as well as power drills and a patio heater to keep the family warm throughout the chilly summer nights. Here are eight devices to spruce up your garden: The Gtech LHT50 is the ideal trimmer to shape any hedges or shrubbery up to 14mm thick thanks to its 31.
5cm carbon steel blade and seven head positions. It boasts a 60-minute runtime and a 10ft reach, and is said to be Gtech’s ‘lightest’ cordless pole hedge trimmer. The LHT50 also has an ergonomic handle and has been awarded a 4.
6-star rating, as one five-star reviewer said: “Cuts very well, nice and light compared with others. Battery power is superb.” Another said the trimmer is ‘very light’ and ‘easy to use’, but this three-star review said: “It’s only really good enough for bushes – it’s not great at getting through small diameter branches.
” Gtech also offers the similar HT50 trimmer, able to cut branches of 25mm thickness, for £219.99, or £262.38 on Amazon bundled with a branch cutter accessory.
Gtech’s CLM50 is a lightweight and cordless electric lawnmower with a carbon steel blade that runs at 2,800rpm. It has a 42cm cutting width, 40-minute runtime, and a removable 50L grass collection bin. The mower also folds down into a compact shape for easy storage when not in use.
The CLM50 has racked up a 4.6-star rating from more than 2,000 four or five star reviews, with one user saying: A happier shopper said: “The mower looks very classy, it’s very easy to use and it cuts the grass beautifully.” One customer found it ‘a little hard to assemble’, but this glowing review said: “So easy to get going and remarkably lightweight when mowing lawns.
[The] large grass box is a bonus. All round winner.” For something different, the Flymo EasiLife GO 500 from Argos is a robotic lawmower which cuts grass all on its own.
The clever gadget independently mows lawns of up to 500m2 and can tackles slope inclines of up to 25% while being 'ultra-quite', according to the brand. The Flymo has achieved a 4.1-star rating, with one glowing review saying: "Just what I needed.
No more leaving the grass till it’s too long you can set it to cut daily weekly or every other day or whatever works best for you. Absolutely brilliant and so easy to set up." Another said: "Loved this handy lawn mower.
It was easy to set up with the instructions provided and the cord was helpful in manoeuvring the lawn mower away from our flower beds." However, this user found the device difficult to get going, writing: "The instructions were so complicated that Einstein would have had trouble setting it all up. I gave up after a few hours of getting nowhere and returned it.
" This weatherproof HeatWave patio heater is wall-mounted and ‘easy’ to fit, arriving pre-assembled and ready to mount using the included fixings. Gtech says it will heat a six-metre range in seconds, keeping everyone warm in those chilly summer evenings. With another 4.
6-star rating, one five-star review says: “So easy to use and install. Wasn’t expecting it to produce the amount of heat for the size.” Another hailed the heater as ‘awesome’, writing: "Brilliant piece of kit.
Does exactly what we wanted and cheap to run." But despite being impressed by its ‘decent amount’ of heat, this user pointed out a potential downside: "The only problem is the length of the power cord, giving limited mounting options." For a more portable heater, Argos’ Home Electric Patio Heater is £20 at £72 and has three heat settings.
The perfect tool for keeping any garden neat, the cordless GT50 Grass Edge Trimmer has a 23cm cutting width and an adjustable head for precise trimming and edging. It can run for up to 30 minutes from a four-hour charge and boasts an ergonomic handle for comfortable use. Amazon is currently offering a £50 discount on this device, dropping the price to £99.
The 4.4-star rated trimmer has racked up more than 2,700 four and five-star reviews, with one user writing: “Machine is nice and light to use. No trailing power lead is good and the rotating blade is very effective.
” This three-star reviewer said: “I did go through two of the plastic strimmers, so I recommend having plenty to hand.” But this happy customer said: “Easy to assemble and use. Definite improvement on my old model, [the] blade didn’t come off at all.
” This more affordable electric hedge trimmer comes in at £76.76 at Amazon , where customers have rated it a perfect five stars. The cordless device can tackle small to medium bushes, hedges, branches, shrubs and twigs, and has a 180 degree rotating handle with a 51cm blade.
One glowing five-star review said: "This is easy to use, lightweight [and] powerful. The blades are sharp and make cutting through thick hedges a breeze." Another said: "It's the first cordless hedge trimmer I've had and it's great.
It's powerful and battery life is good. Way more convenient than the cabled trimmer we had." Despite a five-star rating, this customer said: "Only downside is the weight.
It’s not ridiculously heavy, but after 20–30 minutes your arms definitely start to feel it." Ideal for tackling a range of DIY tasks, Gtech’s Combi Drill is versatile and cordless, featuring quick-change drill actions, hammer and screwdriver modes and 20 speeds including forward and reverse settings. It has a 13mm keyless chuck and an LED headlight for precision, with up to 40 minutes of runtime from a full 75-minute charge.
The drill has so far received just seven reviews, but all have awarded it a perfect five stars. One buyer said: "This is well made and looks good in its black and gold. I’ve only used it once so far but it did the job it was required to do.
" Others have described it as ‘great’ and ‘excellent’ while this user said: “Very good but a little heavy.” A similar drill that’s slightly more affordable is the Bosch Universal Impact Combi Drill which drops to £90 with the code DIYSAVE at Argos..
