Ludhiana: The health department has identified at least six hot spots in the city where dengue-causing mosquitoes lay eggs — Rakh Bag, PAU area, Amarpura, Model Town Extension, Model Town, and Islamganj. While the hot spots include upscale neighbourhoods too, the health department — during a check from Aug 30 to Sept 12 — also found dengue larvae at the civil hospital . A hot spot is defined as an area where five or more dengue larvae are found in every 100 houses.

At the civil hospital, the health department checked 300 containers and found dengue-causing mosquito larvae in four containers. Alarmed by the finding, the department is now carrying regular checks at the hospital. District epidemiologist Dr Sheetal Narang said they will now spray larvicide (a chemical used for killing mosquito larvae) in hot spots.

She added the MC will carry out fogging in urban areas and the blood development and panchayat officer (BDPO) ensures fogging in rural areas. Dr Narang added they also increased awareness activities in hot spots, by pasting posters on precautions against dengue. She added they are also creating awareness among people to not allow water to stagnate in open containers and maintain hygiene.

So far this year, 60 dengue cases have been reported in Ludhiana district. The latest report suggests 31 patients are from urban areas and 29 from rural areas. Of the 31 cases in urban areas, 26 are from Ludhiana city.
