By Jillian Dara Breakfast is big this month with babkas, bagels, and a national chain specializing in brunch moving into the Boston area. Not to mention, a new sports lounge at the Bosse mega-complex in Natick, just in time for Super Bowl LIX viewing parties. Read on for five new culinary hotspots we can’t wait to check out in February.
James Beard Award-nominee, Uri Scheft inspired bakeries around the world (Lehamim Bakery in Tel Aviv and Breads Bakery in NYC) and now he’s expanding his mark in Boston with a new outpost in Kendall Square. Bakey has a cult-following for its gooey Babka, a sweet braided bread that’s the flagship sweet treat of the Israeli and Danish-influenced pastry menu. The babka is available in multiple flavors, including the most popular chocolate, as well as almond, cinnamon, raspberry and pistachio (starting at $6).
Other favorite pastries on the menu include melt-in-your-mouth chocolate chip cookies ($3.75), broissants (where babka meets croissant for $6) and savory croissants like goat cheese ($5.50) or spinach and cheese ($6).
The new outpost will also offer a variety of sandwiches, salads and spreads which guests can enjoy at their counter service or in an intimate dining room. And for treats at home or for the office, this location will also offer catering—delivery broissants to show your employees how much you appreciate them? Say less. 238 Main Street, Cambridge Opens: mid-February Last year, Bosse took over the former Neiman Marcus space at the Natick Mall to debut a multi-functional wellness and lifestyle destination spanning 100,000-square-feet.
Chef Chris Coombs (co-founder of Bosse) made headlines when it was announced he’d helm the culinary programs, including the just opened Bosse Sports Lounge, a courtside dining experience. Coombs designed the menu to elevate the traditional sports lounge fare—instead of plain fries, Bosse serves a trio platter with toppings of cajun herbed parm, spicy ketchup, and chipotle ranch ($14), and while traditionalists will find cheese pizza on the menu, Coombs adds variety with lobster and ‘nduja-topped pizza or lamb Merguez with whipped ricotta, Castelvetrano olives, Calabrian chili, and anchovy ($23). “Our culinary experience is thoughtfully crafted to enhance every moment, whether you’re savoring a meal, competing in a match, or celebrating a special event,” shared Coombs in a statement.
The lounge is a gamer’s paradise, with a 12-by-19-foot high-definition video wall, darts corner and courtside seats to pickleball or paddle. There’s even a courtside menu (think: fried chicken sliders, chicken quesadillas and lighter items like burrata with marinated beets) to match, which makes it an ideal outing for large parties, whether personal birthdays or corporate excursions. 310 Speen St.
, Natick Now Open Celebrated across the country for its daytime dining mantra—focused on breakfast, brunch and lunch—First Watch just debuted its first outpost in New England. In First Watch style, their grand opening included a pancake flipping ceremony to make its mark and revealed plans for future openings in the region. The 3,500-square-foot restaurant is flooded with light, making it a bright way to start your day accompanied by their signature omelets or The Traditional spread, consisting of two cage-free eggs (any style) with the diner’s choice of bacon, smoked ham, chicken apple sausage patties, turkey or pork sausage links; plus, whole grain artisan toast, all-natural house preserves and fresh, seasoned potatoes.
Their griddled sweets are also popular, including lemon ricotta pancakes, French Toast and Belgian waffles while innovative savory items include Parma hash with Italian sausage, melted Parmesan, mozzarella and fresh herbs. Lunch items include a pesto chicken quinoa bowl, superfood kale salad with maple-roasted carrots, warm all-natural chicken breast, dried cranberries, slivered almonds and shredded Parmesan as well as various clubs, wraps, burgers and BLTs. For drinks, diners can opt for boozy or fresh, with respective choices including the Million Dollar Bloody Mary and spiked lavender lemonade or a kale tonic and morning meditation fresh juice.
As soon as spring, First Watch will also start serving a seasonal menu that rotates five times a year to entice diners to come back for something new each time. 1775 Washington St, Hanover Now Open Popular New York City bagel brand just debuted their first franchise, and first Boston location in the Seaport ’s Superette. “This is a city with such a rich food culture and a strong sense of community, and we’re thrilled to bring something new to the table.
Boston is not just another city for us—it’s the beginning of a new chapter as we continue to grow,” said founder Adam Goldberg in a statement. The 770-square-foot space is intimate but exactly what you need for “popping” in to get your new favorite bagel. What makes these bread rolls so extraordinary and dare we say famous (their slogan is “not famous but known”)? The bagels are fresh and served warm with a perfectly crispy crust and a soft, chewy center.
Plus, the everything, poppy, salt and sesame bagels are covered with seasoning — so every bite is as flavorful. PopUp offers bundles of bagels , including their specialty cream cheeses, or schmears , which even come in a vegan scallion version. There’s the dozen bagels with two schmears ($42), the big box of bagels with 30 bagels and five schmears ($95) and an ultimate brunch pack with 18 bagels (including different flavors of everything, plain, poppy, salt and sesame), bundled up with your choice of two fish items, like smoked salmon, and three schmears ($130).

Ssaanjh’s menu presents a collection of Indian street staples and snacks alongside traditional entrees, as well as signature flavors with a twist (even in their cocktails!). Since opening in January, standout menu items already include Dahi Puri Chaat, a sweet and sour yogurt mousse with mango, potato, avocado and raspberry ($10), the Chapli chicken burger meal, an Indian spiced chicken patty with tomato, caramelized onion, chipotle mayo and Amul cheese ($17) as well as tried and true curries like sweet and sour tandoori chicken ($18) lamb saag with spinach and spices ($21) and chicken tikka masala ($18). 1012 Beacon St, Brookline Now Open Sign up for The Dish Stay up to date on the latest food and drink news from Boston.
