Ballet flats , clogs and – of course – trainers have reigned supreme when it comes to footwear in recent seasons. But for spring/summer 2025 , a different style is entering (or re-entering, we should say) the fray: the loafer . Of course, the loafer dates back thousands of years – in fact, it can be traced back to the first moccasin in around 3,500 BC – and has never really gone away.
But updated versions of the shoe were seen all over this season’s catwalks, from the blocky loafers at Bottega Veneta to the white woven styles at Stella McCartney . While loafers are the ultimate work shoe, especially when paired with a borrowed-from-the-boys suit à la Saint Laurent, we like to wear ours with baggy jeans and an oversized bomber jacket – casual, with just the right amount of polish. Below, see the best loafer styles to invest in for spring/summer 2025, inspired by the catwalks.
The square loafer Proving that the loafer is anything but boring this season? Bottega Veneta, whose chocolate-brown model featured a square toe and blocky asymmetrical heel. Best of all, the style can be worn with absolutely everything, from tailored trousers to shirt dresses – if they’re wrinkled, even better! The heeled loafer Trust Miuccia Prada to add an extra edge to our favourite classic shoes (see also her platform brogues dating back to spring/summer 2012). For spring/summer 2025, the designer’s heeled loafers featured metallic hardware that offset the elegance of the style.
Take a leaf out of the Prada style book and wear with coloured tights this spring. The woven loafer While loafers are typically made of sturdy leather, Stella McCartney offered a more relaxed approach with her tasselled woven design. It’s the perfect style for the hotter months, teamed with baggy linen trousers.
The It-loafers Popular with the street-style set, Miu Miu’s classic brown loafer – embossed with the brand’s logo – is one of the It-shoes of the season. Team with a floral dress and long socks to tap into the schoolgirl mood. The ballet hybrid loafer While there was a noticeable move away from quiet luxury this season, there’ll always be a place for minimalism on the catwalk.
