Injuries are a part of football. But injuries to big name players or that start mounting up through the roster can derail a team's season — and that's what the 49ers are trying to avoid. San Francisco was expected to be one of the leaders in the NFC this season.

The injuries started popping up in the preseason, though, and came to a head when the first injury list was due for the 49ers' Week 1 matchup against the New York Jets. Despite the reports being that he would play, star running back Christian McCaffrey was downgraded to out an hour and a half before kickoff. The injuries have only grown for San Francisco since then.

As the 49ers head into a Week 8 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys for "Sunday Night Football," let's recap the injuries they have endured so far this season. Defender Dre Greenlaw was quite literally getting ready to take the field, jumping and trying to get himself amped up, when he ended up tearing his Achilles.

He was not only out for the rest of the game but has yet to play this season. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said that there is a chance he can return by Week 12. Elijah Mitchell Mitchell had been a complement to McCaffrey.

In the preseason, Mitchell was working back from a hamstring injury. He then injured his other hamstring and was subsequently ruled out for the entirety of the regular season. Drake Jackson Jackson was a promising rookie taken in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

He tore his patellar tendon in 2023 and was working his way back, but suffered a big setback this past January. Jackson has played in 23 games and has tallied six sacks and an interception. Deebo Samuel Samuel picked up a calf injury early in the season and was forced to miss a game. The starting kicker suffered an ankle injury in Week 5. It caused him to miss Week 6, 7 and 8. He is expected back after San Francisco's Week 9 bye.

Jauan Jennings The wide receiver injuries continued and after taking over for an injured Samuel, Jennings is now dealing with his own injury. He picked up a hip injury in Week 6 that caused him to miss the Week 7 game against Kansas City. Jennings didn't practice to start Week 8 and is likely to return after the bye week.

Jordan Mason Mason has been filling in for McCaffrey and has played well. Through seven games the backup ran for 667 yards and three touchdowns. He suffered a shoulder sprain in Week 6 that caused him to miss Week 7 against Kansas City.

Mason is expected back in Week 8. Brandon Aiyuk Aiyuk is the latest big injury for the 49ers. He had been the model of consistency while his teammates dropped like flies around him.
