Sixty years of cutting hair haven't soured Danny Causey on the day-to-day of his profession, as he continues to own and operate his second shop at 891 Houston Northcutt Blvd, which recently celebrated its 40th anniversary. While the semi-retired Causey, 81, only services a few longtime clients at his Mount Pleasant residence, his Patriots Plaza Shopping Center location continues to thrive thanks to the efforts of longtime barbers, Sandra Tollison and Debbie Schwager. The popular duo have been Causey's staples for 40 and 37 years respectively with a steady stream of customers pining for their ability to make them look their best.
The attachment to her regulars is part of what's kept Tollison at Causey's for the past four decades. "I've had some of them for 40 years and the people I work for are awesome," said the Columbia native who once owned her own place in the Five Points area. The people Tollison referenced are Danny, his wife Peggy and co-owner Luke Witherspoon.
While Danny originally opened the shop for Peggy in 1984, he took over the reins about 10 years ago when she began experiencing health issues. Prior to that transition, Causey ran a shop on Ben Sawyer Boulevard that he no longer owns or operates, but is still in business with the same family name. When asked what's kept him in the game so long, Causey cited his love for sports and the fact that cutting hair afforded him a chance to talk ball with several of his clientele.
"It's not only sports, but it's other things ...
going on fishing trips and hunting trips," added the Moncks Corner native who moved to Mount Pleasant at 4 years old. "The fact is you pick up a lot of stuff, pick up a lot of gossip." In fact, many patrons he's dealt with over the years look to Causey as a bartender of sorts in that they would seek his counsel for whatever dilemmas they may have been grappling with.
"And sometimes you'll have a little something that'll help them. Something that you say or encourage them to feel better about the situation," observed Causey. Upon stepping inside Causey's, one can't help but marvel at the sight of numerous sports banners and jerseys hanging off the walls, as well as other related items, including golf equipment.
And while the sports aspect of Causey's helps create a welcoming atmosphere, it's the shop's customer-first policy that keeps folks coming back. "Well first, we let them explain how they want it, how they want their hair cut. And then another thing we do is shave their necks.
We have steamed towels and hot lather," Causey detailed. "We just try to cater to them ..
. we try to go by what they say. It used to be when I was a little boy, you would just sit in the chair and the barber just cut it they way he wanted it.
" One offering that is still available, but isn't often requested is shampooing due to many working professionals looking to get in and out in the shortest amount of time possible. In terms of enhancing customer convenience, Causey's welcomes walk-ins, as it has become increasingly more onerous to compel people to show up on time for their appointments due to traffic congestion. However, a new employee Causey has just hired will begin working by appointment only twice a week given her well-established client base.
Causey's constant circulation of customers and its friendly environment has also attracted the owner's granddaughter-in-law, Gracie, to chip in. "I really like the family environment," said the longtime Mount Pleasant resident and Maine transplant. "The customers are great and just the whole business model is really nice.
" Causey's Barbershop is open 8 a.m.-6 p.
m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m.
-5 p.m. on Saturdays.
