Surat: Police have booked four brothers based in Panama and their cousin based in Surat for alleged cheating of Rs 2.6 crore. According to a complaint filed by Surat petrol pump owner Bharat Vashi, he agreed to buy 5.
19 bigha land in Bhanodra village adjacent to Bhestan village in 2013. The four brothers — Badre Alam Ismail, Maqbool Ismail, Rashid Ismail, and Hanif Ismail — owned this land jointly. In the presence of their cousin, Soheb Hafezi, it was agreed that the land would be sold to Vashi at Rs 1.
7 crore per bigha. Vashi's lawyer prepared an agreement to sell the land for Rs 8.82 crore, which was signed by the four brothers and Hafezi, who would deal on behalf of the brothers.
Vashi paid Rs 2.6 crore to the brothers over 16 months. It was decided that the remaining amount would be paid at the time of executing the sale deed.
However, when the time came for the sale deed, the four brothers did not turn up together. Despite reminders, they did not come from Panama. Vashi gave an advertisement in May 2024 in the paper claiming this land.
To this, an objection came from another person, Shailesh Patel, who claimed to have paid Rs 35 lakh to the Ismail brothers in 2013. As the brothers agreed to give land to two different parties to cheat them, Vashi finally filed a complaint with Bhestan police, who booked the brothers and their cousin on March 29.
