Four restaurants along Lake Avenue in Altadena were destroyed on January 8, 2025, due to the ongoing Eaton wildfire, which descended from the foothills and into residential and commercial areas, according to a Reddit thread . Fox’s, a 69-year-old diner that closed temporarily in 2017 and reopened with new owners Monique King and Paul Rosenbluh in 2018, has been heavily damaged by fire, according to the restaurant’s Instagram page . The restaurant was known for its big breakfast plates, salads, and sandwiches served at reasonable prices.
The Reddit thread also listed Thai restaurant Miya, pizzeria Side Pie, and fast-food diner Everest as other businesses that were destroyed by the Eaton fire. A Redditor said Rancho Bar, a local dive bar, was also destroyed, though this has yet to be confirmed. Other businesses, including Altadena Hardware, the Bunny Museum, and Altadena Dry Cleaners, were heavily damaged or destroyed by fire.
Commenters on Reddit claimed that the Jack in the Box and Grocery Outlet market were still standing as of January 8. Altadena, a community north of Pasadena and about 14 miles northeast of Downtown Los Angeles, has been significantly affected by the Eaton fire, with hundreds of homes destroyed by fire and now incoming reports of damage to commercial buildings. The Eaton fire is one of multiple fires that may result in potentially billions of dollars of damage in Southern California.
Two people in the Altadena area have died as a result of the fires. Beginning January 7, 2025, a concurrent fire in Pacific Palisades damaged hundreds of homes, leading to the destruction of some nearby restaurants , including Reel Inn, Cholada Thai, and Rosenthal wine bar on Pacific Coast Highway. Since then, the Palisades fire has grown to 16,000 acres and the Eaton fire to more than 10,000 acres, stoked by ongoing high winds across the region.
Dozens of restaurants in Southern California have announced temporary closures due to power outages or staff safety while others have affirmed they are still open for business , or open to support relief to those who are displaced and first responders. Some restaurants have offered shelter, food and drink, and a safe space to gather for members of impacted communities. Meanwhile, DoorDash and UberEats have suspended service in areas that have been affected by the fires, including Pacific Palisades, Calabasas, Westwood, Santa Monica, Pasadena, and Altadena.
