Pune: As many as 30 passengers onboard a Mumbai-bound private bus had a narrow escape after the vehicle veered off the Pune-Mumbai expressway at Ozarde village near Shirgaon and caught fire on Tuesday. All 30 passengers immediately evacuated the bus and were safe. Fire tenders from Vadgaon, Talegaon Dabhade and IRB doused the fire.
No one sustained injuries. An officer from the Shirgaon police said the incident happened around 5am on Tuesday when the private luxury bus was heading towards Mumbai from Kolhapur. "While plying on the Pune-Mumbai expressway, the bus driver tried to overtake a vehicle from the left side, near Shirgaon.
In that attempt, the driver lost control and the bus veered off the expressway, stopping at the gutter along the expressway after crashing the barricades. The bus may have caught the fire due to friction. All the passengers immediately came down.
After getting information, we alerted the IRB and fire brigades from Vadgaon and Talegaon Dabhade," the officer said. Tahir Momin, leading fireman from the Vadgaon fire brigade, said when his team reached the spot, the fire engulfed the entire bus. Also, the dry grass near the bus caught fire.
"We doused the fire in the bus and in the dry grass to prevent the spread to the nearby locality," Momin said. Momin said all the passengers in the bus had a narrow escape as they deboarded the bus in time. "After veering off the expressway, the bus fortunately did not turn on its side.
Had it turned, it would have been difficult for the passengers to come out of the bus safely," Momin said. The officer from the Shirgaon police said the police have registered a case against the 39-year-old bus driver under sections 281 (rash driving), 125 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the relevant sections of the Motor Vehicle Act.
