Reminiscing about important moments from the past can be nostalgic but also devastating, especially when your memories hold both the best and the worst of your past. In last week’s episodes of “ Way Back Love ,” we get to see more of the deep relationship Kim Ram Woo ( Gong Myoung ) and Jung Hee Wan ( Kim Min Ha ) shared, their hopes and dreams for the future, and most importantly, the bitter reality they are living in. Here are all the times they helped each other walk through their sad yet endearing memories.
Warning: spoilers from episodes 3-4 ahead. As we’ve seen in these couple of episodes, Jung Hee Wan is someone who used to be bright and cheerful, a teenager full of life and hope. However, after Kim Ram Woo’s death, her personality takes a 180-degree turn.
She not only is still suffering from the loss of her best friend, but she shuts everyone out of her life, from her old high school friends to her college classmates, completely unable to enjoy the simplest of things. She worked so hard to get into college and pursue a career as a painter with the help of Ram Woo’s mother, but she couldn’t even be happy about it after taking away that chance for him, or so she thinks. Ultimately, it is Ram Woo’s presence, albeit as a Grim Reaper, that brings back the spark of life that was missing for her.
She gets to spend time with her classmates after a small accident, and she becomes popular among them after she shows her superb abilities as a painter. Nonetheless, she quickly becomes aware of the fact that she can’t keep going pretending Ram Woo is alive by her side. The heartbreak is imminent for anyone watching, and you can’t blame Hee Wan for snapping at Ram Woo at the moment.
After all, losing your first love so young and in such a tragic way makes it impossible to forget. No matter what, the pure feelings Ram Woo harbors for Hee Wan, even after death, remain intact, and he pushes her to get in touch with Lee Hong Seok ( Jung Gun Joo ), his old best friend. Unexpectedly, we learn he is the reason why Ram Woo couldn’t confess his feelings back then, since Hong Seok was in love with Hee Wan too.
But he never blamed him for that—instead, having the chance to see his best friend again gives us a whole new perspective on Ram Woo’s personality and his reason to stay by Hee Wan’s side. Finally, Ram Woo gets to confess his feelings, although it is too late for them. Most of the time Grim Reapers are typically depicted as dark, sad, and unwanted creatures that prepare people to go on to the next life.
But this is not the case for Ram Woo. His bright, perky, and clumsy personality brings a lot of spark into the otherwise dull life of Hee Wan. Somehow, this makes it all the more tragic because we know Ram Woo is there to take Hee Wan when she passes away.
Only, he isn’t ready to do it just yet—not after realizing she is still hurting after his death and that she couldn’t do all the things she wished for. The heavy burden in her heart had turned her into someone completely different. Hong Seok’s appearance gives us the chance not only to cry our eyes out while watching these best friends reunite but also to know the full story of Kim Ram Woo’s death, and they couldn’t have made it more tragic even if they wanted to.
Youth is supposed to give us the chance to enjoy everything to the fullest, but when those happy times meet with tragedy, it is inevitable to feel it is too unfair. And it was unfair to Ram Woo and Hee Wan. When they are about to confess their feelings for each other during their last high school trip, a fire breaks out in an observatory, trapping Ram Woo inside, taking his life, and changing Hee Wan’s forever.
Next week, we will see Hee Wan embarking on her last mission with Ram Woo before her final days: visiting their beloved mother and teacher. Although we are reaching the conclusion of this K-drama, we still have a lot to unwrap from this story, so we better prepare our hearts and a lot of tissues for the last episodes of “Way Back Love.” Watch “Way Back Love” here: Watch Now Hey Soompiers!
