3 Rochester swimmers advance to Class 2A state finals in two individual events apiece

JM's Julia Ogren, Century's Sophie Blixt and Mayo's Madeline Gau will all compete in two individual events during the state swimming and diving finals on Saturday following their prelim performances.

MINNEAPOLIS — John Marshall junior Julia Ogren had two first-place finishes during the Class 2A state swimming preliminary round on Friday. Her times earned her Automatic All-American status in the 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yard freestyle events. Ogren clocked in at :54.

07 in the 100 butterfly and :50.03 in the 100 freestyle, sending her to the state finals for the third straight year. ADVERTISEMENT Ogren won titles in both events during the Section 1, Class 2A final meet last week.



Last season, she earned top-three finishes at the Class 2A state meet in the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle. Century junior Sophie Blixt and Mayo junior Madeline Gau will also compete in the state finals in two individual events each. The top eight swimmers in the preliminary round qualify for the state finals.

Blixt placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.85) and seventh in the 100 free (:51.53) during the prelims on Friday.

She finished third in the 100 breast at the Class 2A state final meet last year. Meanwhile, Gau placed fourth in the 100 butterfly (:56.28) and eighth in the 100-yard backstroke (:57.

13) in the preliminary round. Gau came in fourth in the 100 butterfly and seventh in the 100 backstroke during the state finals last season. Mayo sophomore Elise Weingarten finished 23rd in the 200-yard individual medley (2:13.

In the 50-yard freestyle Century junior Chloe Magnuson placed 19th (:24.45) while JM sophomore Abi Tri came in 20th (:24.52).

Tri swam in the 100 breaststroke as well, finishing 22nd (1:10.33). ADVERTISEMENT There were a few relay teams who competed in the prelims as well.

The 200 medley relay event featured Mayo’s team of Weingarten, Gabriella Lee, Gau and Penny Hauser who placed ninth (1:50.36). JM’s squad of Kayla Mingo, Tri, Ogren and Maysen Pettengill finished 12th (1:51.

06). In the 200 freestyle relay, Century’s team of Chloe Magnuson, Ally Pool, Blixt and Sarah Homme came in 12th place (1:39.47), while JM’s team of Tri, Shannon Penney , Pettengill and Ogren had a 15th-place finish (1:40.

Winona junior Abby Williams qualified for the Class 1A state swimming finals in two events during the preliminary round on Friday afternoon. Williams placed fifth in the 100 breaststroke, clocking in at 1:06.78.

She finished sixth in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:12.11. Austin sophomore Gracie Greenman is heading to the finals after coming in second place in the 100 backstroke (:57.

47). She finished behind Mounds Park Academy’s Alaina Biebl (:56.02).

ADVERTISEMENT The top eight swimmers in the preliminary round qualify for the state finals. Red Wing sophomore Eliana Cory finished 18th in the 500-yard freestyle (5:32.17) while Winona senior Elisa Chittaro came in 22nd place in the 200 freestyle (2:01.

35). Winona’s 400 freestyle relay team made up of Madeline Modjeski, Piper Jones, Chittaro and Williams missed out on the finals, finishing 15th with a time of 3:46.15.

The Class 1A diving preliminaries were held on Thursday. The Class 1A state swimming and diving finals will start at noon on Saturday, Nov. 16 at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
