Flower specialist LeAnne Samuelson, based at Prestige Botanicals, recommended the "most resilient flowers " that can "stay fresh for weeks". " Orchids , chrysanthemums , and carnations are among the most resilient flowers and can stay fresh for weeks," said LeAnne. To help avoid disappointment, it's best to turn away from "delicate" blooms for Mothers' Day , which are likely to wilt rather quickly.
LeAnne elaborated: "Flowers are one of the most cherished gifts for Mothers' Day, and it’s disappointing when they don’t last as long as we’d like [...
] delicate blooms like tulips and peonies are more likely to wilt after just a few days." No matter which flowers you get, there are way to make sure the blooms last for as long as possible. In addition to picking long-lasting flower varieties – such as orchids, chrysanthemums, and carnations – it also helps to use the best sort of vase.
Wide-brimmed glass or ceramic vases are recommended because they are less prone to bacteria buildup. Once you have the best vase, and you have the flowers, it's best to "cut about an inch off each stem at a 45-degree angle". LeAnne explained: "This increases the surface area for water absorption and helps keep your flowers hydrated.
"Don’t forget to trim the stems every couple of days to give them the best chance at thriving." Any foliage that would otherwise fall into the water should also be removed to help prevent the flower stems from turning slimy. Flowers also last longer when stored by indirect sunlight, "away from radiators or other sources of heat".
LeAnne added: "Also, steer clear of fruit bowls, as the ethylene gas emitted by ripening fruit can speed up the aging process of flowers." Also be on the lookout for "cloudy" water, which "is a sign that it's time for a refill" of fresh water. LeAnne explained: "Changing the water frequently will help to eliminate any bacteria and keep the water clean for optimal hydration.
" Another top tip is to make homemade flower food by mixing two tablespoons of sugar and two tablespoons of white vinegar, which needs to be added to the fresh water. "The sugar feeds the flowers, while the vinegar helps to lower the pH of the water, which makes it easier for the flowers to absorb and keeps bacteria at bay," LeAnne explained..
