3 Charlottesville men arrested for assault on Downtown Mall

The assault originated as a dispute over stolen property at the Haven day shelter, according to police.

Three Charlottesville men have been charged in connection with a caught-on-camera assault on the city's Downtown Mall last month. Brown Two of the men, 27-year-old Alijah Elese Brown and 41-year-old Timothy Wayne Jason Lee Mawyer, have been charged with misdemeanor assault. The third man, 34-year-old Allen Jerome Curry, has been charged with misdemeanor destruction of property.

Charlottesville police said all three were involved in the reported assault on the city's Downtown Mall on Oct. 20. That assault began as a conflict over stolen property at the Haven, the city’s day shelter for the homeless on Market Street, according to police.



Mawyer Surveillance footage the police distributed to the public shows a man running down First Street North toward the Mall from the direction of the Haven with two other men in pursuit around 10:46 a.m. Curry The first man trips and falls.

His pursuers catch up with him and proceed to kick him while he is lying on the ground, before a woman can be seen arriving from the same direction as the Haven and breaking up the fight. Charlottesville police officers said they were dispatched to a report of an “active disorder at the Haven” that morning. “After canvasing the area, they located an injured adult male sitting on the ground in the 100 block of West Main Street,” police said in a statement.

“The male was transported from the scene to the UVA Hospital for further evaluation of non-life-threatening injuries. Through further investigation and witness statements, it was determined that the assault stemmed from a dispute at the Haven over stolen property.” Records show Brown and Curry being booked at Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail.
