Nigeria is set to host the African Military Games, showcasing its commitment to fostering peace and security across the continent. The Chief of Defense Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, disclosed this on Monday during a press briefing in Abuja, highlighting the Armed Forces’ preparedness for the event, which runs from November 18 to 30, 2024, at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja. General Musa emphasized that the games, which will feature participation from 25 African countries, provide an opportunity for the Nigerian Armed Forces to demonstrate their skills, promote unity, and strengthen military partnerships.
“The hosting of the African Military Games in Abuja is a testament to Nigeria’s dedication to promoting peace and security. It also provides a platform for our armed forces to compete internationally, exchange ideas with their African counterparts, and build lasting relationships for the security and stability of the continent,” he stated. The CDS assured that all necessary arrangements, including infrastructure and logistics, have been finalized to ensure the smooth running of the games.
He expressed confidence in the Nigerian Armed Forces, stating they are ready to make the nation proud both on and off the field. He also highlighted the economic and developmental benefits the games will bring to the Federal Capital Territory and the country at large. “Hosting this event will enhance sports and economic development, boost Nigeria’s global recognition, and foster national pride,” General Musa noted.
General Musa urged Nigerians to rally behind the Armed Forces and support the games. “We need all Nigerians to come out and cheer for the teams. Let’s show the hospitality Nigeria is known for.
Together, we can celebrate the spirit of sportsmanship, camaraderie, and unity that this event embodies,” he appealed. He also extended gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his consistent support and encouragement to the Armed Forces. Air Vice Marshal Abidemi Marquis, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee and Director of Sports at Defence Headquarters, confirmed that eight countries had already arrived for the event.
He noted that this second edition, hosted by Nigeria, is expected to be the largest African Military Games ever. “All necessary facilities have been upgraded, and we are working with federations and international bodies to ensure a fair and successful event. Dope testing will be conducted, and vehicles have been provided to facilitate smooth movement to the stadium,” AVM Marquis stated.
