
The 23rd Concurso Brasileiro de Canto Maria Callas has announced its winners.The winners were divided into male and female categories, with soprano Pollyana Santana (first), mezzo-soprano Gabriela Bueno (second), and soprano Laura Duarte (third) taking the prizes in the female categories. In the male category, three tenors claimed the top prizes, including Wilken Silveira (first), Mauricio Etchebehere second), and Eduardo Machado (third).
Winners are given the opportunity to perform in master classics as well as at public venues.They were selected from amongst 114 singers from nine Latin American countries. In sum, 53 contestants were selected for the semifinals with 18 chosen as finalists.
The jury included Luiz Fernando Malheiro (jury president), Raquel Pierotti, Sabino Lenoci, Richard Martet, Pedro Salazar, Jorge Coli, Robson Tirotti, and Fabiana Crepaldi.The competition was held March 23 – 30 in São Paulo and Jacareí. It was founded by Paulo Esper.
