TWENTY-TWO people died instantly and many others are fighting for their lives at a hospital after two PMV buses collided at Pabrabuk, near the border of Western and Southern Highlands provinces on Friday. One survivor from the 15 seater bus, Eric Tobias confirmed with this newspaper that 13 other passengers all died while two of them survived, both now at the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU). A local eyewitness, Timson Mura, from Pamprabuk told Post Courier that a 25-seater coaster bus from Walium travelling towards Mt Hagen collided with a 15-seater bus from Pangia in the Southern Highlands Province heading to Mt Hagen.

The two buses collided head-on at the famous Pinapple market at Pambruk junction in Nebilyer along the Highlands Highway between the two provinces. A local eyewitness, Timson Mura, said 22 people were confirmed dead at the scene of the accident consisting of 13 passengers of the 15-seater and 9 from the 25-seater bus. He said the rest were rushed to Mt Hagen General Hospital with serious injures.

Western Highlands provincial police commander Chief Superintendent John Sagom confirmed the accident and described it as a tragic accident. PPC Sagom said police are investigating the cause of the accident and urged drivers to take extra precautions while driving on the roads as the Christmas and New Year periods approach. Another tragic accident along the Highlands Highway occurred last week Monday at Young Creek involving another 25-seater coaster bus that resulted in the death of a young medical doctor who was working at the Mt Hagen General Hospital at the time.
