Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Jan 5: The Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP) in Jammu district have registered 200 FIRs under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and arrested 300 individuals for drug peddling in the year 2024. Besides this, 83 vehicles used in the drug smuggling have also been seized. As many as 153 FIRs were registered against 246 individuals in heroin recovery cases alone, a police spokesman said.
Among those arrested, he said, 19 hardcore drug peddlers were booked under the stringent PIT NDPS Act. The spokesman further said that police have also attached 11 immovable properties (residential/commercial) worth Rs 4,69,91,369 and three Movable Properties (Vehicles) worth Rs 12,50,000 in the district under the NDPS Act in the preceding year. He added that four drug hotspots were demolished during 2024 and police are working seriously on all fronts to demolish the remaining drug hotspots with the active support of civil administration and the General Public.
According to him, police have also recovered contraband and psychotropic substances including 43.854 Kgs of heroin valued at several hundred crores in the black market. “Recognizing the importance of public awareness in the fight against drug abuse, the J&K Police conducted 19 drug awareness programs, 52 PCPG meetings, 47 Thana Diwas and 62 debates across the district in 2024,” he said, adding that these initiatives aimed to educate the public, especially the youth, about the dangers of drug abuse and to promote a drug-free society.
The campaigns were well-received and have played a crucial role in fostering community support for anti-drug initiatives, he said. The spokesman stated that J&K Police during 2024 made functional one of the largest and most equipped Police Drug De-addiction, Rehabilitation and Mental Health Care Centre at Channi, Jammu. It is pertinent to mention here that the Police Drug De-addiction Centre was made functional at DPL Jammu in 2013 and this year in the month of March, it was shifted to a newly constructed building equipped with all the latest facilities for the treatment of drug addicts at Channi, Jammu.
Since 2013 till December 31, 2024, 16645 drug consumers and addicts visited the OPD of Police Drug De-addiction Centre Jammu for treatment and while number of IPD patients and drug addicts was 1915 during the same period. In 2024 only, the police spokesman said that 1486 patients, and drug addicts visited the OPD of Police Drug De-addiction Centre and the IPD number during the same period was 287..
