This was confirmed by the Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee of the hospital, Professor Muhammad Abba Suwaid, who disclosed that the affected staff were temporarily isolated and their blood samples taken for testing. All results came back negative.

Professor Suwaid credited the development to the professionalism and diligence displayed by AKTH staff in handling patients, adding that their adherence to standard protocols prevented further spread of the virus within the hospital. The incident stemmed from a confirmed case of Lassa fever involving a 22-year-old pregnant woman brought to the hospital on April 5, 2025. Following the diagnosis, the hospital management acted swiftly, implementing all necessary infection control measures to contain the disease.

In addition to screening hospital staff, others who were traced through contact with the patient were also tested. The only person who returned a positive result was the patient’s husband, who is now under the care of the Kano State Epidemiology Unit. The hospital has since notified the Kano State Epidemiology Unit, which has initiated contact tracing in Garun Malam Local Government Area, where the patient originated.

Hospital authorities reassured the public that the situation is under control and efforts are ongoing to prevent further transmission.
