2 Syracuse-area counties are among NY’s cancer hotspots

The statewide cancer rate in the latest data was 465 cases per 100,000 people.

Y. — Two counties in the Syracuse area are in the top 10 in New York for rates of cancer, according to state Health Department data. Oswego County had the third-highest rate of cancer in the state at 545.



5 cases per 100,000 people in the five-year period covering 2017 to 2021. That’s the most recent data available from the New York State Cancer Registry. Cortland County was just behind Oswego at No.

4 statewide with a cancer rate of 541 cases per 100,000. Onondaga County ranked 28th statewide at 500.2 cases per 100,000.

The No. 1 county on the list was Niagara County, with a cancer rate of 549 per 100,000 people. Statewide, the cancer rate in the most recent data was 465 cases per 100,000.
