Surat: A 28-day-old infant girl, abducted from Surat Civil Hospital on February 12, was rescued by Khatodara police, who also arrested the 24-year-old kidnapper from Jharkhand. Preliminary investigations revealed that the accused, Suraj Mehta, harbored one-sided love for the infant's mother and resorted to kidnapping after she rejected his proposal to elope and marry him. Mehta was traced to Gadhva district in Jharkhand, where he had been staying with a relative of his sister.

After abducting the child, he moved around different locations in Surat before fleeing to Jharkhand. According to the police, the infant had not even been christened yet and was admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) due to health issues. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-4) Vijaysinh Gurjar told TOI, "Mehta, a neighbor of the girl's family in Pandesara, stayed with the mother in the hospital under the pretext of helping her.

On the morning of February 12, he kidnapped the infant from the NICU and fled to Jharkhand. Our team traced him to Gadhva district, where he was hiding." Police are interrogating Mehta for further details.

Reports suggest that the infant's mother, already married with three children, including the kidnapped girl, had rejected Mehta's advances. For a week, Mehta fed the infant powdered milk and purchased diapers for her. Mehta hails from Palamu district in Jharkhand, while the infant's family is originally from Bihar.
