Yellowstone prequel 1923 has left fans in tears with its harrowing series finale after Spencer Dutton (played by Brandon Sklenar) and Alex's (Julia Schlaepfer) ultimate fates were revealed. The double-bill finale began with Banner Creighton (Jerome Flynn) opening up to his wife Ellie (Sarah Randall Hunt) about his regrets and how he didn't agree with Donald Whitfield's (Timothy Dalton's) lack of morals. Meanwhile, Alex came up with a plan of starting a fire inside the car to keep warm so she could stay alive.
Elsewhere, Donald continued to emotionally and physically abuse sex worker Mabel (Virginia Gardner). Clyde (Brian Konowal), who was double-crossing Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford), went with him to the train station to wait for Spencer's arrival. Banner also turned up to the station with the intention of travelling to Portland with his family.
Jacob confronted him and warned him about how there will always be people trying to take his land. As Spencer and Alex approached Livingston station, Spencer saw his uncle on the platform and immediately knew something was wrong. During a shootout on the platform, Banner killed Clyde, confirming his allegiances had changed.
However, he was then killed himself in a tragic turn of events. He lived long enough for Jacob to see he had done the right thing. The Dutton home was surrounded by Donald's men, which led to a shootout and it saw Zane Davis (Brian Geraghty) and his men heavily outnumbered.
Thankfully, Spencer managed to get to the ranch in time and, following an unbelievable solo attack on the remaining enemies, he made his family home safe again. Unfortunately for Elizabeth (Michelle Randolph), she realised Jack (Darren Mann) was missing and his dead body was retrieved. Elizabeth ended up leaving the ranch as there was nothing left for her there.
Away from the main feud, Mamie Fossett (Jennifer Carpenter) and her men found Teonna Rainwater (Aminah Nieves) but they didn't believe she was a force of evil. They arrested her but felt bad for her. She went to court but ended up free to go.
, but with no home to go back to, she felt lost. She was given a horse and was told to find a "new home", heading west to California. Alex had realised she was right next to the train line and in an astonishingly lucky twist of events, Spencer was on the train.
She used alcohol to make a bigger fire as a warning signal to flag the train down and Spencer saw Alex from the window. He jumped off the train and ran back to her and their reunion left fans in tears. They managed to get on another train but it was clear Alex had hypothermia.
She had been minutes away from death when Spencer found her. However, her spirits were lifted when she was finally able to meet Jacob, whose previous gunshot wounds had reopened during the train station fight. Spencer said he would meet Alex at the hospital in Bozeman while Jacob joined Alex on the journey to the hospital.
However, fans may have realised Alex would not survive as Elsa Dutton's (Isabel May) narrative explained: "She saw him, tasted him one last time and that was enough". In hospital, Alex's body rejected the baby at six months pregnant, but by some miracle the boy managed to let out a cry. Alex said she would name the baby John, after Spencer's brother.
She knew she was going to die from her perilous journey but had accepted her fate, knowing she wouldn't be able to look after the baby properly with amputated hands and feet. Spencer managed to see her one last time with their baby at the hospital, but sadly Alex didn't make it through the night. Spencer never remarried but had another son with a widow.
He never stopped loving Alex and as an old man he died at her grave. Following Alex's death, Spencer and Jacob went to kill Donald. They shot him in the head at his breakfast table and killed Lindy (Madison Elise Rogers) in the process.
Mabel was left to make her escape. 1923 is on Paramount Plus.
