Ludhiana: As 311 cases of stubble burning were reported in Ludhiana district till Nov 23 in the ongoing paddy harvesting season . The district administration has imposed a fine of more than Rs 8.22 lakh on around 177 farmers and has got cases registered against 164 farmers for burning stubble, the latest action taken report (ATR) says.
As per the ATR of Nov 23, the number of cases in which environmental compensation imposed for crop burning in the district stood at 177 till Nov 23. IPL 2025 mega auction IPL Auction 2025: Who went where and for how much IPL 2025: Complete list of players of each franchise The report suggests that total environmental compensation worth Rs 8,22, 500 has been imposed in such cases of which Rs 6,35,000 was recovered by the authorities whereas in 12 cases environmental compensation was yet to be imposed. The ATR also says that 164 cases were registered against farmers under Section 223 of the BNS (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) in the district in the paddy harvesting season till Nov 23.
Meanwhile, Ludhiana was at the tenth spot among the Punjab districts where cases registered under such offences are concerned. Firozpur had the highest number of such cases registered at 879 followed by Tarn Taran (559). The ATR says that the administration has issued warning notices/show-cause notices to 55 nodal/supervisory officers.
Local administration officials say that they have been asked to explain why stubble burning cases are being reported from their area of responsibility. They have been asked to beef up activities to check such incidents. The ATR says that in the state, Ludhiana is again at tenth position so far as such notices issued to nodal/supervisory officers are concerned.
In Gurdaspur, the number of such notices is 165 followed by Taran Taran (164). Ludhiana is among the districts where prosecution action has been initiated under Section 14 of the CAQM (Commission for Air Quality Management) Act against a nodal/supervisory officer as in one such case it has been done in the district. The district administration authorities say that besides enforcement, engagement with farmers has helped in checking cases.
ADC (General) Amarjit Singh Bains, who is nodal officer for stubble burning related cases in the district, said that there has been a huge fall in farm fire cases in the district. He said that besides the enforcement on the ground, there has been direct engagement with the farmers “which has helped in bringing such cases down”. The ADC said that their officers are on the ground to check farm fires.
The ATR says that till Nov 23, no prosecution was filed under the Air Act and no action has been taken under Section 126/170 of the BNSS (Preventive action related)..
