A preliminary survey by Anganwadi workers revealed 16,343 malnourished children in the suburb region of Mumbai in Maharashtra . Also Read | Malnutrition in India is a worry in a modern scenario According to the Poshan Tracker App, 2,38,094 children were registered in February 2025, with 2,34,896 of them underwent weight and height measurements. Of these, 2,887 children were classified as severely malnourished and 13,457 as moderately malnourished.
Guardian Minister Ashish Shelar has instructed officials to devise a plan in 10 days to address malnutrition among children in Mumbai’s suburbs. Ministry of Women and Child Development developed Poshan Tracker App to monitor and track the progress of Anganwadi Centers, workers, and the beneficiaries of nutrition programs, addressing malnutrition. The numbers on malnourished children in developed district like Mumbai Suburban has become a matter of concern.
“The administration should immediately decide on measures and submit a written report within the next 10 days, said the Guardian Minister of Mumbai Suburban District”, said Mr. Shelar. Mr.
Shelar held a meeting with Suburban District Collector Rajendra Kshirsagar and other officers from the Women and Child Development Department, discussing the measures on the prevailed situation. The registered children under the National Child Health Programme, were examined from October 2024 to the end of February 2025. 1,159 children were found severely malnourished and 3,096 were moderately malnourished.
While in February 2025, 450 children were found to be severely malnourished and 407 were moderately malnourished. These number are being officially verified and presented in the meeting. The plans are underway to establish more urban child development centres for severely malnourished children and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s health department to expedite the survey process.
