14 malaria cases logged in dist so far this year

Ludhiana: The district has reported 14 cases of malaria this year. Of these, 10 cases are from urban areas, specifically, Ludhiana city, and four from rural areas. Two of the cases from rural areas are from Payal and one each from Machhiwara and Koom Kalan.

No case was reported from nine blocks of rural areas in Ludhiana district. Malaria cases have also been reported from Ekjyot Nagar, Moradpura Tyre market, Nirankari Mohalla, Gurpal Nagar, Dholewal, Shastri Nagar, Dugri Phase 2, Chander Nagar, Mall road and Jawaddi. There are fewer malaria cases in Ludhiana this year as compared to last year.



However, with more than a month of vector-borne disease season left, the number can increase. In 2016, 83 malaria cases were reported in Ludhiana. The number dropped to 27 in 2019, then seven each in 2020 and 2021.

In 2022, the figure stood at 32. Meanwhile, health officials said that steps are being taken to check vector-borne diseases . District epidemiologist Dr Sheetal Narang said that of the 14 cases reported, eight had travel history.

She assured that regular surveillance and larvae checking was being done. She also pointed out that cases had not been reported from a cluster and once a case was reported, spraying was done in around 50 surrounding houses, depending on the area. Health officials said that four to five malaria cases were indigenous while the remaining patients originally belonged to UP and Bihar but worked in the district.

Experts said that since vector-borne disease could occur till the onset of winter, people needed to take precautions. Former Ludhiana IMA president, Dr Narrotam Dewan said that it was important not to allow water to stand in open containers and in coolers as mosquitoes could breed in such spaces. He advised the use of mosquito nets, wire guage and mosquito repellents.
