Bhubaneswar: With soil testing for construction of Bhubaneswar Metro rail going on in full swing in the city, officials said 13 trains having three coaches each will be procured initially. The project is expected to be completed by Dec 2027, the officials said. For the elevated Metro corridor from Biju Patnaik International Airport here to Trisulia in Cuttack, soil samples were collected from multiple locations by excavation to ensure that columns for tracks and stations through the route have a strong foundation.
“Construction based on soil quality is dynamic. Based on the soil testing report, materials to be used will be decided. For civil construction work, three private contractors were awarded contract by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, which has taken up the work although we are the executing agency,” said in-charge CEO of Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), Kalyan Patnaik.
He said after civic work is completed, there will be a new tender floated for electrical, electronics, mechanical, track work, escalator installation, among others. “We will procure 13 trains with each having three coaches. We may, however, require more trains in the future.
It will take 45 minutes to travel from Trisulia to the airport, but we are yet to calculate the interval time between trains to reach a station,” added Patnaik. Metro travel along the route from Jayadev Vihar to Nandankanan is expected to reduce vehicle rush on the busy stretch to a considerable extent. Commuters who shuttle daily between Cuttack and Bhubaneswar will be able to reach the city centres in just 30 minutes.
BMRCL officials said for the soil test, the machines excavated up to a depth of 60 feet to get an accurate result. “The columns will be 13-ft high, and they will go down to a considerable depth for taking the weight of the tracks and the trains. Secondly, Bhubaneswar comes under a seismic zone and is cyclone-prone as well.
So with a futuristic approach and an eye on disaster resilience structure, all precautions will be taken,” a BMRCL official said.
