The Management of Ibeju-Lekki General Hospital, Lagos State, says that 1,113 residents benefitted from its one-week free medical and surgical intervention programme. Its Medical Director, Dr Ime Okon, disclosed this in an interview on Thursday in Lagos. She restated management’s commitment to reducing morbidity and mortality through quality healthcare service delivery.
“This intervention is to herald the Yuletide, using the season to give, and giving back succour to residents. “The initiative was also designed to raise awareness, educate the community, and support the Lagos State Government’s efforts in bringing the THEMES agenda to the grassroots level,” Okon said. Guardian reports that Gov.
Babajide Sanwo-Olu devised T.H.E.
M.E.S as his administration’s acronym for his six strategic development agenda.
They include: Traffic Management and Transportation, Health and Environment, Education and Technology, Making Lagos a 21st Century Economy, Entertainment and Tourism as well as Security and Governance. Okon said that the intervention was crucial, especially with the current economic challenges faced by many individuals and families. The medical director said the hospital targeted indigent residents in its week-long medical and surgical outreach which had participation from over 65 health professionals of different specialties.
She noted that her team visited traditional leaders to get a higher level of exposure and commitment to the course of better healthcare services to the communities. The medical director said the outreach had a series of impactful events, including eye screening, provision of eyeglasses and eye drops, and dental care, which included scaling, polishing and treatment of dental ailments. Other interventions, she said, included chest X-rays, prostate screening, voluntary blood donation and counselling.
“Free preoperative investigations and clinical or anaesthetic reviews were done on almost 75 clients. “About 28 patients were successfully screened and certified fit for major surgeries, while 18 patients were recommended for minor surgeries. “A total of 40 ended up having successful surgeries with the major surgeries being about 70 per cent herniorrhaphies and appendectomies; all procedures, investigations, hospital admissions were done totally free,” she said.
Okon commended Vital Health International, a NGO; Africa Global Mission, stakeholders and staff of the hospital for their collaboration and magnanimity in supporting the medical and surgical intervention..
