11 Los Angeles Restaurants That Closed in January

Los Angeles’s restaurants continue to face difficult headwinds starting in 2023 which led to an industry-wide slowdown that’s continued into 2025. From the lingering impacts of the Hollywood strikes to adverse weather and increased costs (labor, rent, ingredients, etc.), many variables continue to batter restaurant owners who operate on razor-thin margins.

Here are notable restaurant closures for January. For closures in 2024, click here . January 2025 Patra Burgers on Sunset — As expected, Echo Park’s decades-old Patra Burgers closed on December 31.



The former and beloved neighborhood burger joint will eventually become Mexico City’s popular churro maker, El Moro . Sage — After rebranding from a plant-based restaurant into one that served regenerative meat in 2024, Sage Regenerative Kitchen, formerly known as Sage Plant Bistro & Brewery, closed its remaining Southern California locations in Echo Park and Pasadena on January 5, 2025. Shins — Cypress Park’s acclaimed pizzeria Shins Pizza closed on January 7, 2025, after just 18 months in business.

Shin Irvin and Bestia alum chef-partner Melissa López, opened Shins in August 2023. Gasolina — Woodland Hills’ popular Spanish restaurant closed on January 19, a few months shy of its 10th anniversary. Barbara Jean Soul Food — Chef Eric Campbell opened Barbara Gene’s Soul Food Cafe in August 2024 by preparing smoky meats with a style that combined his Texas and Southern California roots.

The Arlington Heights restaurant’s last day was January 22. Lustig — Chef Bernhard Mairinger’s Lustig , Culver City’s innovative Austrian-style restaurant , closed on January 26. Lustig operated for one year, Mairinger cited multiple changes to the restaurant’s hours of operation, menu, and staffing as the reason behind the shutter.

The Kitchen — Silver Lake’s 24-year-old morning-to-night restaurant ceased service on January 26. The Kitchen saw plenty of neighborhood changes from its prominent corner on Fountain near Sunset Boulevard. Guerrillas Tacos — Los Angeles’ groundbreaking modern Mexican restaurant on a prominent corner of the Arts District, closes permanently on January 31, 2025.

Managing partner Brittney Valles-Gordon and chef Wes Avila opened the restaurant in 2018. Universal CityWalk Hollywood — A slew of closures at Universal CityWalk went down in January, including Popcornopolis, Sparky’s, and the Crêpe Café. Burgette and Bar Monette — Both chef Sean MacDonald’s Santa Monica restaurants closed on January 31.
