1 dead, 3 critically injured after ambulance from Kolkata crashes into dumper in Odisha

An ambulance from Kolkata carrying a patient to Hi-Tech Medical College and Hospital in Bhubaneswar crashed into a dumper on Thursday, resulting in the death of one person while three others sustained critical injuries. The incident occurred when the ambulance from West Bengal was on its way to Hi-Tech Hospital in Bhubaneswar . Due to unknown reasons, the ambulance rammed into a dumper parked alongside National Highway (NH-16) near Chandikhole railway over-bridge in Jajpur district .

On being informed, a patrolling team arrived at the mishap spot and rescued the injured. They were first rushed to Barchana community health center (CHC). After preliminary treatment, they were shifted to Cuttack-based SCB Medical College and Hospital as their condition turned worse.



Police officials also worked to clear the highway and restore traffic flow. It was not immediately known if the mishap took place due to low visibility owing to the chilling fog and cold or the driver fell asleep at the wheel. The exact circumstances leading to the collision are under investigation, with a focus on road safety and the need for cautious driving.

This incident has yet again highlights the growing concerns over road safety on National Highways, prompting renewed calls for stringent measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future. “We were on patrolling duty when we received information that an ambulance coming from West Bengal rammed into a truck near Chandikhole railway over-bridge. We immediately rushed to the spot and found four people stuck in the vehicle with blood all over their bodies,” informed SPO Sushil Kumar Panigrahy.

"They were coming from Kolkata and were on their way to Hi-Tech hospital in Bhubaneswar . However, they met with an accident near Chandikhole railway over-bridge. The reason is yet to be known," the SPO stated.

“We alerted the fire brigade who arrived at the spot and rescued all the four people. One of them was dead while the other three and rescued immediately rushed them to Barchana Community Health Centre (CHC). They are all critically injured.

The dead body has also been shifted to Barchana CHC,” he added..
