Ustad Zakir Hussain was born on March 9, 1951, in Kolkata. He was the son of another legend and tabla player Ustad Allah Rakha. From a very young age, he was surrounded by music, instruments, and a lot of music practices under his father's tutelage. His talent soon caught many eyes, and he emerged as a child prodigy, captivating the world with his virtuosity and fresh approach to the instrument.
He performed his first concert in America at the age of just 11. In 1973, he launched his first album 'Living in the Material World'.
Education and Achievements
His father Ustad Allarakha was a very famous tabla player of his time. He gave Zakir his initial training in music. Zakir Hussain received his primary education from St. Michael's School in Mahim, Mumbai. He did his graduation from St. Xavier's College in Mumbai.
Ustad Zakir Hussain was awarded with Padma Shri in 1988, received the Padma Bhushan in 2002, and Padma Vibhushan in 2023. He received his first Grammy Award in 2009. In 2024, he also won 3 Grammys for 3 different albums in just one night. In this way, Zakir Hussain won a total of 4 Grammy Awards.
